HUNGARIAN HOUSE

A Cultural Heritage Landmark of Milas from the Republican Era

Occupying a special place in the modern urban memory of Milas, Nedime Beler House, ALSO KNOWN AS THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR FEVZİ BELER MANSION AND THE NEDİME BELER GIRLS' DORMITORY, is a distinctive example of residential architecture from the Republican era.

As part of the group of buildings known locally as the “Hungarian Houses,” the house is an important surviving example of the architectural traditions introduced to Milas by Hungarian master builders BROUGHT FROM RHODES BY FEVZİ BELER, THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR OF MİLAS.

Its architectural features, which distinguish it from traditional Milas houses, can be seen in its roof design, façade composition, balconies and structural details. In this respect, the house also bears witness to the social and architectural transformation of Milas during the early years of the Turkish Republic.

Nedime Beler and the Toksarı Family

Nedime Beler (1899–1991) belonged to the Toksarı family, one of the long-established families of Milas. Her father, Rıza Toksarı, served as the seventh Mayor of Milas.

Nedime Beler married Hüseyin Fevzi Beler, who served as District Governor of Milas. The house therefore preserves the shared legacy of the Toksarı and Beler families, both of whom left their mark on the history of local administration in Milas.

Hüseyin Fevzi Beler

Hüseyin Fevzi Beler was an important figure in the administrative and social history of Milas. His name appears among the district governors of Milas from the period preceding the establishment of the Turkish Republic, and the Beler family remained part of the city's social life for many years.

Over time, this house, closely associated with the Beler family, evolved from a private family residence into a building serving the wider community.

A Home for Female Students

One of the most meaningful chapters in the history of the house began when it was dedicated to supporting the education and accommodation of female students.

COMMISSIONED BY FEVZİ BELER AND DONATED BY NEDİME BELER to the Municipality of Milas for the purpose of providing accommodation and supporting the education of female students, the building served for many years as the “Nedime Beler Girls' Dormitory.”

This new purpose gave the historic building an important social function. The house became part of the lives and educational journeys of successive generations of students.

In later years, the building also contributed to the development of higher education in Milas. In 1995, it welcomed the first students of Milas Vocational School.

A Living Heritage of Milas

Today, Nedime Beler House is valued not only for its architectural characteristics but also for the place of the Toksarı and Beler families in the city's history, its contribution to the education and accommodation of female students, and its role in the educational history of Milas.

Its transformation from a family residence into a girls' dormitory and subsequently into one of the first centres of higher education in Milas makes the building a silent witness to the city's changing social life.

Preserving the name and legacy of Nedime Beler, this remarkable historic building continues to be an important part of the cultural memory of Milas, connecting its past with its future.
